The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an international standardized test to evaluate English proficiency of non-native speakers. This language assessment tests four skills: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. The students get scores between 0-9 bands. It is offered in two forms: IELTS-Academic, IELTS-General. The former one is for students aspiring to take admission in universities of English-speaking countries and is widely accepted test across certain universities of the world such as in New Zealand, Australia, Canada and many more. This is also a requirement to join certain professions in these countries such as medical profession (doctors, pharmacist and lab technicians). The latter one, however, is for migration and work purposes.
Similarity between IELTS-GENERAL V/S IELTS-ACADEMIC
Time allowed in both tests is 1 hour in which student needs to do two tasks. In this, 20 minutes should be spent on Task-1 writing at least 150 words. In task-2, you must write 250 words spending 40 minutes on it. The task-2 in both cases has higher weightage. Task-2 in both tests is Essay writing but task-1 is different in the two tests.

The students are asked to write a formal, informal or semi-formal letter of at least 150 words in 20 minutes.
IELTS – Academic
The students are asked to write a report on a chart such as bar graph, pie chart, table, line chart, diagram or process of 150 words in 20 minutes.

In Writing test, the candidate is given a question paper having two questions- an essay and a letter. In addition, the candidate receives two answer sheets to write the responses of the essay and the letter. The candidate is responsible for spending appropriate amount of time on each task.
